Silk Mills Studio & Gallery Wedding in Frome.
One of the great things about being a wedding photographer is that it can take you anywhere. One place I was lucky enough to had visited on my travels was Silks Mills Studio & Gallery in Frome, Somerset. Silk Mill Studios and Gallery is one of the best preserved former textile mills in the south-west and holds exhibitions, musical and social events. On this day however it was to hold the wedding for Stephen & Christine. In this gallery I have displayed some photos I took on their big day.
It’s always a good laugh watching the lads get ready. This is where a moment of realisation sets in, and someone asks me how to do a tie properly. I don’t know from that angle mate. Here Stephen is opening a card from his wife to be. Black and white is something I like to add into an album as you’ll see. I normally start at the grooms location then head to see bride if its possible, as this is more important… isn’t it lads.
One of the most memorable parts for me about this wedding day was the hiring of these two classic VW vehicles. First of all they look amazing in photos, secondly the campers are great for moving groups of people around. I loved these shots and how they sit nicely in the street outside the house. You’ll see here that it was an overcast day giving and soft and even light.
These images here some of my favourites. Yeah I know, it's a car but when I see a VW at a wedding I get very excited. Capturing the driver getting in after final preparations before hitting the road tells a little story. There are some amazing suppliers for wedding vehicles in the South-west. I would recommend and old VW, Mercedes cars or Saab. They give a nice classic yet stylish look. Think about the colour also, earthy tones settle well within photos. Convertibles can also be brilliant as this gives more opportunity for the photographer being able to photograph you. It’s always worth asking the vendor if you can have the car for half an hour at the venue or somewhere scenic for photos.
Christine is ready to leave the house, and is being cheered by here bridesmaids. When displaying images on my website of bridal prep I like to keep it simple. I cant stand it when photographers post images of half dressed bridal parties online, GDPR and all that. Here Christine walks out the garden and she is seen in her dress for the first time, she is then heading out to make her journey to the wedding venue.
Here is a photo at a wedding I always like to try and capture, inside a vehicle from the outside. The windows of the car helped to give a soft light, this always prevails on a sunny day. This is the moment Christine is about to leave her home to go to her wedding. You can see how she is glowing with happiness and also is her father. These are smallest yet biggest moments. I have also traveled in a vehicle with couples to get extra photos, just ask and if it’s possible with logistics i’m more than happy to do this.
The venue has lovely outdoor seating areas, perfect for summer weddings. From here I was able to capture the ceremony and also the rustic backdrops that Stephen & Christine wanted from this location. If the weather was to be bad, the inside is very well lit with a glass ceiling and white walls giving plenty of light. Perfect for photographers. While outside capturing this wedding I was able to walk around the sides and back quietly to get those extra angles.
Here is a classic example of having your classic vehicle for a moment on scene. Most car owners like this as it will stroke the owners ego and Im happy to let them have some car photos if they want paying for the time. The image below I’m fond of as a little detail, I did originally edit this as colour but I just preferred it in black & white. With many wedding photos I will take a lot of duplicates , I often edit one of these in black & white and add to a wedding album to give people a little more choice.
It’s always fun at a wedding when people are chilling and having drinks to capture photos of other people or couples alone. This is a great chance for me to hopefully meet future wedding couples… who knows. Just let me know if you would like me to spend time doing this. It’s a great way to document people plus I don’t have to be running around all day getting tired. Giving me more energy for the evening.
Here we took a wander for half an hour to escape the madness and get some photos of the couple alone. I love the old town feels from this part of Frome. Stephen & Christine were able to speak for the first time ( nearly completely alone ) and I just took some nice simple snaps. Stephen braved the flower carry and pulled it off well, I like to try this in images as it can let the bride hold the train of her dress if needed helping people feel more relaxed.
Once getting back from exploring parts of Frome we took the time to get some group shots. The venue had a nice lean-to on the side of the building helping with shade. Christine is buzzing as you can see stood with her girls. After speeches the party began. As you’ll see here I was fortune enough to have lots of natural light due to the well lit studio and summer daylight hours. The whole crowd erupted when they walked into the room and I had to be quick with my camera as these moments pass quickly.
Aaaaagh dad, he’s happy!
